About the Workshop:Â
The Urban Foodscapes Workshop is to provide a basic understanding of growing vegetables in containers and the schedule is as below.
The sessions are facilitated online using the PowerPoint and demo mode.
Day 1: Urban Foodscapes
Need and necessity of growing food crops, Concept of organic vegetables, limitations, etc. : The topic discusses issues of Safe and functional food, pesticides residues in vegetables and fruits, advantages of organic terrace gardening, etc
Day 2: Practices of growing vegetables in containers
This chapter covers seeds, seedlings, types of containers, Types and season of vegetables, Preparation of containers and methods of planting, etc.
Day 3: Good growing conditions for vegetables, herbs and fruits
This session deals with Light requirements, Plant nutrition, Watering practices, Cultural practices and other growing conditions
Day 4: Home composting principles and practices
This topic covers Waste segregation, aerobic and anaerobic composting
Day 5: Plant pests and their sustainable management
This session covers on Insect pests, plant diseases, non-insect pests and organic methods of their management
Day 6: Crop specific tips for Urban Foodscapes
This session is to give some specific Growing tips for leafy greens, bush vegetables, vine vegetables and fruit plants

About the Host:
Rajendra Hegde is a doctorate in Agricultural Entomology from University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, specialized in integrated pest management. He has worked at various capacities, involving in both urban and rural agriculture activities, in corporate as well as development sectors. With 18 years of experience behind, he has published 50 research/extension papers apart from many popular articles. He is actively involved in promotion of Urban Foodscapes and Landscapes through various activities. He is a Co-founder of Biological Research Innovation Centre and Solutions LLP (BRICS LLP) at Bengaluru, where the focus is on products that are useful in production of safe and functional food; natural and safe household and personal care products made of soapnuts and shikakai to adopt safe grey water practices and Green Lifestyle.
