Indian Folk Art Series 2: Kalamkari Art
Kalamkari is a type of hand-painted or block-printed cotton textile, produced in Isfahan and Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The Srikalahasti style of Kalamkari (Kalankari), wherein the "kalam" or pen is used for free-hand drawing of the subject and filling in the colours, and is entirely hand worked.

What You Will Learn: 
In this 2-hour workshop, you will learn to paint the motifs and understand how the painting is of the kalamkari colour palette.
Most forms used in this form of art are Devis and gods. The intricacy is the beauty of Kalamkari.

Materials Needed: 
1. Paper or canvas
2. Colours (acrylic or watercolours) 
3. Pencil
4. Eraser 
5. Microns of black pens for outline 
6. 0 number brush for outlines
7. 3 to 6 number brushes for filling colours 
8. One flat brush for a wash

Ganjifa Art (Sep 13, 11 am): Ganjifa cards are circular or rectangular, and traditionally hand-painted by artisans. Ganjifa was introduced in India under the Mughal period in the 16th century. The combination of light and dark colours will make it unique.

Pichwai (Sep 26, 11 am):Pichwai paintings also known as "Pichvai" is a traditional Indian art having its origins in Rajasthan, India. Pichwai art features intricate painting portraying Lord Krishna (Sreenath Ji) which is done on fabric using dark rich hues.

About the Artist: 
Savita Gopalakrishnan - the quintessential Mumbaikar,  and the brain behind Urbankala, a one-stop artistic gifting solution. She works on the painted/ sculpted merchandise at Urbankala. Art has been her passion and she also spreads the therapeutic art through her workshops across Mumbai. She is a self-taught artist with 7 years into this colour venture, after her stint as a Lighting & Texturing Expert. While she has been into various forms of art, including contemporary and quirky art, her main focus has been Indian folk art.
