Dialogues with Cinema: How did we get Romance wrong in Bollywood?
We have always admired Hollywood movies which revolve around love like the Before series, The Perks of Being A Wallflower, and La La Land, where love and romance have been depicted beautifully and there is more to the story than just 'the chase' and the 'happy ever after'.
For various reasons, the Bollywood industry, which forces almost every movie to revolve around the plot of a romantic relationship, does not dive deep into this genre. There is a lack of character development and subplots. Watching a generic Bollywood romantic movie is almost like watching a daily soap on the big screen!
And to address the elephant in the room, the portrayal of romance in Bollywood movies raises many eyebrows and many questions about the nature of female agency in these movies. Phrases like 'Chumma De De' and 'Tu Cheez Badi Hain Mast Mast' have wrongly influenced generations of movie-goers. Yes, this is big issue.
So, let's meet and discuss how Bollywood failed the romance genre and misled generations of romantics. Let's discuss how it can improve itself.
