Chalk Carving WorkshopArt & Craft

June 28, 2020, 5 p.m.
This event will be held online.

In this guided session, participants can expect to learn the intricate art of chalk carving. They will be taken through a step by step process by which they should be ultimately able to produce a carved chalk masterpiece of their own.

What will you learn?
Have you seen a carved piece of chalk and wondered how it's possible to shape something so small and brittle to produce beautiful pieces of art? In this workshop, participants will be introduced to chalk carving and taught the basics of this patience testing art form. We will also help them with tips and tricks on how to work with the medium without causing it to break while carving (since chalk breaks so easily). Together, we will carve a piece of chalk and convert it into a piece of art, one step at a time. At the end, We will also discuss a few ideas on how to preserve it long term.

Materials needed:
1. A box of chalk (coloured or white based on personal preference. We use the brands Apsara or Kores dustless chalk)
2. A pen knife or a pocket knife (readily available in stationary stores)
3. A poker/poking device for carving (Let us know if you'd like me to send you images of the tools)
4. A mask if you're allergic to dust
5. Old newspapers to work on

About the Artist: Madhuri is a self taught mixed media artist who lives and loves to try new things with her artwork including different mediums. She likes to think outside of the box and away from convention, so most of her works reflect the same. Having lived in a city like Melbourne where coffee is not just a beverage but a culture, she started painting with coffee. Other mediums include wine painting, glow-in-the-dark painting, chalk carving, stippling and so on. She is a firm believer in celebration of diversity and hence dreams of travelling to as many places as possible to incorporate the essence of different places and different people in her work, so as to touch lives globally with the same.
